April 8, 2025 | 6 min read
When you’re shopping for insurance through the Health Insurance Marketplace, medical coverage is likely your top priority. While medical coverage is essential for managing your health, don’t forget coverage for your eyes and teeth. On the Marketplace, you can select affordable health insurance plans that also include adult dental and vision coverage.
Get Coverage for Your Whole Health
If you wear glasses or contacts or have dental health concerns, it may be wise to consider plans that include vision and dental care. But even if you have 20/20 vision and no dental concerns, it may be a good idea to have a plan for your sight and smile. With a health insurance plan that includes dental and vision coverage, you can be prepared with the healthcare benefits you need when you need them.
Dental and Vision Services Covered on Marketplace Plans
Marketplace insurance plans with adult dental and vision typically cover preventive care as well as a range of additional services.
Dental benefits often cover routine preventive care at no cost. Routine preventive may include:
- Routine cleanings
- Oral exams
- Some X-ray exams
- Topical fluoride treatments
Plans may also provide some coverage for a range of additional dental services, such as:
- Minor restorative fillings
- Endodontics
- Scaling and root planing
- Periodontal maintenance
- Simple extractions
- Adjustments, repairs, relines, and rebases for prosthodontics
- Crowns and bridges
- Dentures
- Complex extractions and surgical services
For these additional services, you will likely have to share some of the costs. This is known as coinsurance.
In addition, plans will probably have a limit on how much they will pay each year for dental services. When you shop for Marketplace health plans with vision and dental coverage, be sure to check the plan’s “Summary of Benefits and Coverages” to learn more about the annual maximum and other coverage details.
Adult vision benefits generally include optometry care, such as:
- An annual eye exam
- Vision testing to assess your eye health and vision capabilities
- Some coverage for standard eyeglasses or contact lenses
Pro Tips
Coverage for eye injuries and other medical eye care is likely covered under the medical benefit on your health care plan.
How to Find Marketplace Plans with Dental and Vision Included
When you’re shopping for Marketplace plans, look for options with “vision + adult dental” in the plan name. Plan names vary by location, but as an example, you may see a plan with a name like Elite Silver. This plan does not include coverage for vision and adult dental. However, you may also see Elite Silver + Vision + Adult Dental. This plan does include vision and adult dental benefits.
You’ll likely find several plans that include this additional “vision + adult dental” coverage. The “compare” option can help you easily evaluate which plan might be the best fit for your needs. Each plan also has a “plan details” section. There, you can review the “Summary of benefits and coverages,” which provides more thorough information about what is covered and what your costs will be.

Questions about Dental and Vision Coverage on the Healthcare Marketplace
Eye care for members 18 years of age and younger, or 20 years and younger in Kentucky, is already included with all Ambetter Health plans.
Ambetter Health plans that include “vision + adult dental” are only available with both options together.
In most states, adults 19 years of age and older can utilize adult dental plans. In Kentucky, where pediatric coverage is through age 20, adult dental is for those aged 21 and older.
Unfortunately, adult dental and adult vision coverage are not considered essential health benefits. So that means that any advanced premium tax credits can’t be applied to the part of your premium that comes from the adult dental and vision coverage.
