Essential Tips for a Happier, Healthier Heart

Healthy lifestyle habits are not only beneficial for your heart; they may also keep you feeling your best.

Here are some key tips for maximizing your cardiovascular health:

Routine Lab Work

Scheduled blood testing is so important to keep you in the best of health. Each of us is different, and we respond to medication differently. For example, a dose of warfarin, a blood thinner to prevent blood clots, may be effective for one person but not the next. The same goes for heart medicines, seizure drugs, and others.

Try Interval Training

Intensify your exercise program by including interval training to burn extra calories and boost your metabolism. You may break a sweat with this type of workout, which involves intense activity at varied intervals. It's a great way to improve your fitness level and shed extra pounds.

Get Plenty of Sleep

Sleep deprivation may increase the risk of high blood pressure and heart attack, according to the Mayo Clinic. Aim for seven to nine hours each night, and keep to a regular schedule of turning out the lights at the same time every evening.

Spend Time with a Pet

Owning a pet is emotionally rewarding and may lower your risk of heart disease. Having a four-legged friend is calming, and it's beneficial to bask in a pet's unconditional love. If you're a dog owner, you'll have Fido right there waiting, making it more likely that you will take a heart-healthy stroll around the neighborhood.

Drink Tea

Get brew happy with a cup of tea, either green or black. Drinking one to three cups per day may be linked to a lower risk of heart disease and a decline in calcium deposits in arteries.

Eat a Fiber-Rich Diet

By eating foods high in soluble fiber, you may lower your levels of "bad cholesterol" while consuming more heart-healthy antioxidants. Get smart with your meal planning. Avoid processed foods, and stock up on whole grains, legumes, fruit, and veggies.

Unwind

Take time each day to consciously relax, maybe with mediation, yoga, or stretching. Not only does it release stress, but it may lower your risk of heart problems.

Take Your Medication as Directed

Your doctor may recommend medication to help you feel better. Always talk to your doctor before making changes to your treatment.
