Diabetes Screening and Prevention Tips for High-Risk Populations

Diabetes is a serious disease that may cause major complications if it is not managed properly. Fortunately, there are some screening tests and prevention tips available that might help keep you from developing this disease. These may be especially helpful if you fall into the high-risk category or have a history of diabetes in your family.

  • Ask your doctor to perform a screening test. Screening tests can help identify people with pre-diabetes, whose blood glucose numbers are elevated but aren't high enough to be categorized as full diabetes.
  • If you have already been diagnosed with pre-diabetes, follow your doctor's advice on nutrition, weight management, stress management, and exercise to help prevent the disease from developing further.
  • Healthcare providers generally advise people with a likelihood of developing diabetes to exercise every day to stay healthy. Physical activity may help keep your blood glucose levels lower and more balanced, which might potentially minimize your chances of developing diabetes.
  • Stress may be a big factor in elevating your blood sugar levels, and your doctor might advise you to try to eliminate stress wherever possible. Counseling may be a big help in learning how to manage your daily stress. Exercise might also help you work off stress, creating positive feelings and beneficial physical effects, too.
  • Nutrition counseling may help you make healthier food choices when you're eating out and planning meals at home. Cooking nutritional meals might also help your family members who may be at risk of developing diabetes.
  • Take your medication as directed. Your doctor may recommend medication to help you feel better. Always talk to your doctor before making changes to your treatment.
