When Should You Talk to Your Kids About Smoking and Other Addictions?

Natural curiosity drives children to pay close attention to the world around them. This includes observation of many different types of addictive behaviors, such as smoking. As a parent, ensuring your child enjoys a healthy lifestyle is of the utmost importance. Knowing when and how you should approach the subject of smoking and other addictions with your child can help you succeed.

2 Years to 5 Years:

  • Teach children that addiction begins with making a conscious choice that has consequences.
  • Allow your children to ask questions, and do your best to give answers they can understand.
  • Let children know how smoking and other addictive behaviors affects activities they enjoy, such as sports.

6 Years to 10 Years:

  • Create consistent family time like meal gatherings and game nights.
  • Encourage sports activities, and address how these activities promote fitness and health. Teach them to take pride in these attributes.
  • Discuss how smoking and addiction affects a person's appearance and even their smell.
  • Talk to your children about the constant threat of peer pressure, explain the consequences, and let them know you understand this challenge.

11 Years and Older:

  • When talking to your children about smoking, drinking, or drug use, avoid any type of tone or language that could be taken as a demand.
  • Keep an open line of communication with your children, and discuss the importance of choosing their friends wisely.
  • If you suspect your child has experimented with smoking or another addictive behavior, don't wait to talk about your suspicions, but avoid accusations.
