Good mental health is critical to your overall health and quality of life. When you hurt physically, finding help is usually a doctor’s or urgent care appointment away. When you hurt emotionally, it’s hard to know where to go or what to do. Luckily, you have resources through your health plan and in your community to help you start feeling like you again.
Where to Find Mental Health Resources and Support, Online and in Your Community
According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, millions of adults in America struggle with some form of mental illness.
There are many ways to get help and many treatment options available. Treatment is usually a combination of different types of therapy and medication.
Here are some places you may want to look for mental health resources:
Online
The National Alliance of Mental Illness (NAMI) allows you to search for support organizations in your state. You can also call their Help Line (800-950-NAMI) or text “HelpLine” to 62640 if you need to talk to someone right away.
Chat rooms, such as the Lifeline Crisis Chat and Healthful Chat, allow you to connect with other people who may share your struggles.
In Your Community
You might be surprised to learn how many mental health resources may be available in your own community. MentalHealth.gov is a great starting point. It provides a lengthy database of mental health resources and breaks them down into age groups as well as providing more information about each organization.
