Ambetter Health Sponsors Baton Rouge General’s Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign and Urges Screenings During Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Baton Rouge, La. (Oct. 6, 2025) – Ambetter Health is proud to serve as presenting sponsor of Baton Rouge General’s 2025 “Protect Your Pumpkins” breast cancer awareness campaign and pop-up pumpkin patch, reinforcing its commitment to improving the health of communities across Louisiana.

Breast cancer remains the second leading cause of cancer death among women in Louisiana, according to the Louisiana Department of Health (LDH). The state currently ranks fourth in the nation for breast cancer mortality, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention( CDC). Yet, these statistics can be improved—early detection saves lives.

During National Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October, Ambetter Health is highlighting the importance of regular screenings to detect breast cancer in its earliest, most treatable stages.

“Mammograms remain the best tool we have to find breast cancer early, when treatment is most effective,” said Lynn Hayes, BSN, director of provider network performance with Ambetter Health. “If you are over 40 or have additional risk factors, it’s important not to delay. Early detection is key.”

A recent study shows that breast cancer diagnoses have increased steadily among women under age 50 over the last two decades—making awareness and vigilance even more critical.

Ambetter Health reminds the public that signs and symptoms of breast cancer may include:

  • A new lump in the breast or armpit
  • Thickening or swelling of part of the breast
  • Skin irritation or dimpling
  • Redness or flaky skin on the breast or nipple area
  • Pulling in of the nipple
  • Nipple discharge other than breast milk (including blood)
  • Changes in breast size or shape
  • Pain in any area of the breast

“If you notice any of these changes, talk to your doctor right away,” Hayes added. “And if you have a family history of breast cancer, be sure to share that information. Together, you and your provider can determine the right screenings and prevention strategies for you.”

Ambetter Health marketplace plans cover preventive services like mammograms at no cost to members. For individuals who are not eligible for Medicaid and don’t have employer-provided insurance, Ambetter Health offers affordable options for access to comprehensive care.
